Creative Tools: Civic Engagement of Young People manual presents an approach and provides tools for engaging young people in municipal governance based on the work of Growing Up In Cities Canada.
In Growing up in Cities Canada, IICRD brought a focus to the importance of engaging young people in creating child and youth friendly communities and including them in the decision-making process. Through research, holding of events, and development and implementation of creative tools, the GUICC team has positively impacted the social inclusion of young people. In partnership with local organizations in Vancouver, Gatineau, and Halifax, IICRD created a network in which to research topics of interest to young people based on the community they live.
The approach and tools in the kit build on our combined experience of working with young people. They were field tested in three different Canadian cities: Vancouver, Halifax, and Gatineau, and provide a Canadian example of real municipal child and youth civic participation. The tools themselves are designed to be youth-friendly, fun and stimulating, and to provide a practical basis for gathering young people’s perceptions on the strengths and challenges in their local communities. They also form a basis for developing concrete action plans that involve young people in civic decision-making in partnership with local adults, community planners, and municipal government representatives.
