Dr. Heykoop has been with IICRD for over ten years. She is a research associate with Refugee Law Project, Makerere University, Uganda, and a faculty member at Royal Roads University (RRU). She has ten years of experience as a scholar-practitioner working with children, youth and their communities in Uganda, Sierra Leone, Timor-Leste, Brazil, Thailand, Zambia, the United States of America, and Canada. Cheryl has specifically worked with a broad range of organizations including UNICEF Innocenti Research Centre, Save the Children, the Liu Institute for Global Issues, Plan International, Right to Play, and governments, civil society, and academics to strengthen child and youth participation and protection. Cheryl has played an important role in IICRD’s child-centred community development and action research process entitled The Circle of Rights: Reflective Planning for Change (COR). Cheryl achieved her Doctor of Social Sciences with Distinction at Royal Roads University, for her dissertation on young people’s engagement in post-conflict truth telling in Uganda.
