An article by Philip Cook, International Institute for Child Rights and Development (IICRD), & William White (Xelimuxw), Aboriginal Liaison Officer UVIC published in the journal of Intergenerational Relations in 2006 examines children’s recovery from the risks of community poverty, illness and death against the background of the devastating affects of HIV/AIDS on children and their communities in South Africa. Specific attention is focused on an innovative approach to children’s rights that builds on local cultural strengths, specifically those age old traditions of balance, healing, community stability and recovery, held by traditionally trained Elders.
